The Course

Course Overview

Located just south of the market town of Lutterworth, the course is set in rolling countryside. The club places an emphasis on maintaining the course in good condition and the greens are currently considered as among the best in the county.

With plenty of established trees a number of ponds and the meandering river Swift, the course places a premium on accuracy. The course is a good test of golf and provides plenty of interest for all standards.

Hole 1

Gents Par 4 - 324yds

Ladies Par 4 - 294yds

This is a deceptively easy looking opening hole where position is far more important than distance. A drive to the bottom of the hill leaves a short uphill approach to a well guarded green with bunkers to left and right. Anything long leaves a very difficult chip back.

The White Swan

The White Swan can be found in the beautiful village of Shawell in Leicestershire. We are situated between the towns of Rugby and Lutterworth, just a few minutes from the M1 and A5. We provide the perfect stop off for a refreshing pint of real ale or a bite to eat from our delicious menu.

Hole 2

Gents Par 4 - 333yds

Ladies Par 4 - 313yds

The wide fairway looks easy to hit from the elevated tee, but the position is again critical due to a copse of Scots pine blocking the approach from the left. A ditch protects the approach and the green itself is protected on three sides by bunkers with the River Swift providing an interesting backdrop to the hole.

Hole 3

Gents Par 4 - 404yds

Ladies Par 4 - 341yds

This is a difficult driving hole with the gentlemen having to drive over the River Swift to an undulating fairway protected left and right by tall trees. A significant fairway bunker catches any misdirected drives and a large cherry tree on the right edge of the fairway can interfere with the second shot to a large elevated green. This has a narrow opening with a large bunker protecting the approach and has subtle slopes on the green as additional protection.

Hole 4

Gents Par 3 - 176yds

Ladies Par 3 - 138yds

The River Swift dominates your view of this hole passing in front of the tee and down the left hand side of the hole. You hope that any shots hit to the left catch the greenside bunker otherwise they are destined for a watery end. Whilst there is plenty of room to the right, the elevated green is narrow and protected by large mounds making it very difficult to get up and down if you have played safe.

Hole 5

Gents Par 4 - 385yds

Ladies Par 4 - 337yds

The gentlemen have to drive off over a small lake in front of the tee whilst the ladies have a much easier start to the hole. The hole swings left to right, any shots hit down the right will have to negotiate a large mound covered with semi-mature trees. The green is protected at the front, both left and right, by bunkers and the green has a significant slope so positioning of the approach shot is critical on this hole.

Hole 6

Gents Par 5 - 485yds

Ladies Par 5 - 404yds

For the gentlemen this is a relatively simple par 5, but for the ladies a little more difficult. The direct line to the green is blocked by a number of tall trees on the left so the drives have to be threaded towards a relatively narrow gap between them and the copse on the opposite side of the fairway to allow a simple second shot. The large two tiered green is protected by a bunker to the left, the back tier has two distinct levels with the left side higher than the right.

Hole 7

Gents Par 4 - 399yds

Ladies Par 4 - 389yds

This is a simple looking hole from the tee with the major threat being the out-of-bounds within 10yards of the left hand side of the fairway. The approach to the green is protected at the front right and left by large bunkers with a small pot bunker catching wayward shots to the right. The large two tier green is deceptively long and any shots over hit will present a very difficult pitch back over a bank to a green sloping significantly away from you.

Hole 8

Gents Par 4 - 451yds

Ladies Par 5 - 436yds

For the gentlemen this is a long tough par 4, but for the ladies a relatively straightforward par 5. The hole doglegs right to left around a line of tall trees and the ability to hit a right to left shot is an advantage for the long hitter. Shorter hitters often have to contend with playing a shot from a difficult sloping lie. The large sloping green is protected by bunkers at the front left and right and wayward shots can be punished off the banking that surrounds the green.

Hole 9

Gents Par 3 - 162yds

Ladies Par 3 - 128yds

This tree lined hole looks deceptively simple. The main challenge is the green which slopes significantly from front to back making many putts a challenge. Hit the ball beyond the hole in the summer and you will be fortunate to stop the ball with a chip or a putt close to the hole on the way back. Try to play safe and leave the approach short and a bunker awaits you.

Hole 10

Gents Par 4 - 400yds

Ladies Par 4 - 327yds

The first dilemma on this hole is presented by the drive. The two large trees block the simple route to the wide fairway so you have to decide whether to go over, through the narrow gap between the trees or play a right to left shot round them. Having found the fairway the second shot is across the River Swift to a large slightly elevated green protected left and right by bunkers.

Hole 11

Gents Par 4 - 375yds

Ladies Par 4 - 312yds

The tee shot on this hole is to a wide fairway and the only problems are from wild or long shots that can run into a ditch across the fairway. For the second shot you have to contend with a narrow sloping and undulating fairway with a ditch running down the right hand side. The left of the hole is well populated with trees, but the green itself only has a bunker to the right hand side but has some severe slopes to the front and left as protection.

Hole 12

Gents Par 3 - 185yds

Ladies Par 3 - 139yds

This tree lined hole is severely uphill to a green that is semi-sunken into the top of the hill. Deep bunkers will catch any shots to left or right, but the green gathers shots that are slightly off line. Miss the green on the short side and you would be wise to settle for a bogey.

Hole 13

Gents Par 5 - 489yds

Ladies Par 5 - 447yds

This hole swings left to right with out of bounds all the way down the right hand side. Play too safe however and you will go through the trees bordering the left of the hole. Placement of the second shot is key on this hole to give you the best line in, avoiding three bunkers on left side approach and the green side bunker on the right. The green itself is slightly domed, few putts are straight.

Hole 14

Gents Par 4 - 454yds

Ladies Par 4 - 380yds

For many this is the toughest hole on the course. The hole is a slight dogleg left with several large trees on the inside corner. The drive is to a wide fairway, but you need to hit it to the right half for a clear view of the green. Stray too far right or left and trees become a major hazard. Further challenges await as the fairway significantly narrows due to trees on the left and right of the fairway 70 yards short of the green. The green is long, flat, and relatively narrow with a right hand greenside bunker and severe slopes falling away from the back half of the green.

Hole 15

Gents Par 3 - 199yds

Ladies Par 3 - 110yds

This is the longest par three on the course for the gentlemen, but shortest for the ladies with the level of the green some distance below that of the gents tee. The approach to the left hand side of the green is protected by a large oak tree and shots falling short of the green on the right could well end up in the pond. A deep bunker catches shots drifting right and a steep bank at the front will roll back anything under hit. The large shallow green slopes back to front.

Hole 16

Gents Par 4 - 337yds

Ladies Par 4 - 250yds

For the ladies this is a relatively easy straight hole, but for the gentlemen it is a significant dogleg left and can be a card wrecker. The gentlemen play from an elevated tee either through a narrow gap or more aggressively over the tree lined corner which is out of bounds. Two fairway bunkers protect the far side of the dogleg. The approach to the green is relatively simple although it is protected by bunkers to left and right.

Hole 17

Gents Par 4 - 335yds

Ladies Par 4 - 319yds

On this the fairway swings slightly right to left, but slopes from left to right and holding the ball on the fairway is the major problem. If you fail then you can encounter trees down the right hand side although the bunkers, intended for the previous hole, can come into play. If you hit your drive down the left then a line of tall trees come into play whichever side of them you finish. The green is cut into the side of a hill with bunkers both on the left and right.

Hole 18

Gents Par 4 - 350yds

Ladies Par 4 - 329yds

The home hole where you may be tempted to open your shoulders, but trouble waits both left and right. A copse of trees down the right is followed by out of bounds. On the left are two large fairway bunkers so the landing area for the drive is narrow and if you do get it on the fairway then be sure to avoid the small trees 70 yards short of the green. Judging the distance to the green is difficult as it is uphill and the bottom of the flag is always obscured by the banks of the bunkers protecting the left hand side of the green. The green itself presents all sorts of problems with humps, hollows and slopes to contend with making it a great finishing hole in matchplay.
