Success for the B Team

I am delighted to report that the ‘B’ team fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the better in the last month or so. One (myself) would argue that it is despite my absence through holiday and injury, but others (the rest of the players) would argue it has been because of! Either way, we have managed to regain three of the four trophies we regularly contest with the local Clubs, Nuneaton, Ullesthorpe and Hinckley.

The elusive one continues to be the A/B team fixture against Cosby where the contest is always held at the venue of the holders, so we need to go there and win. This year we fielded a strong team with four regular ‘A; teamers, but came up just short 3½-2½.

Better luck next year lads.

At Last Hinckley in the Bag

The most notable and poignant victory was against Hinckley when Tony Rogers (in my absence) took the side to Hinckley and managed a memorable away victory 3½-2½. No one can remember ever having won at Hinckley before! So the stage was set for the return where I came back as non-playing Captain (injury this time) to motivate the side to a magnificent 5-1 win so regaining the Burworth Cup 8½-3½ on aggregate.

History of the Burworth Cup.

However, the poignant side of the story was revealed brilliantly by the acting Hinckley Captain, Neil Robinson who, in his after dinner speech, gave a brief history of the Burworth Cup. It was first contested in the mid-70’s by a group of friends who belonged to the two Clubs, but as time went by eventually the competition waned and after a number of years the trophy was found rather dusty in our cabinet by Bill Horton. It was mutually agreed between the Clubs that it should be contested annually on aggregate by the two ‘B’ teams in their home and away fixtures. The poignant revelation was that the cup was originally jointly donated by our former Captain and President, Harry Adlerstein, and the well known Hinckley businessman, Frank Downes.

We as a team were very proud and humble to have regained the silverware just a few short weeks after the sad passing of Harry. We hope we did you proud too Harry! As Neil said, Clubs should be aware of their history and try to make sure such stories don’t disappear with time.

Bizarre Moments

On a lighter note we had what we thought was an amazing coincidence in our recent match with Park Hill at Lutterworth. On returning to the Clubhouse it was pointed out to me that in one four ball by chance all four players were off the same handicap so no shots offered or given. When I announced this in my short speech, another group came up with an even more surprising coincidence; all four of them were smokers who rolled their own cigarettes! How bizarre is that. Just for the record our two were Nigel Pearce and Morgan Perkins.

By the time this is printed I hope to have had a successful away day to Whittington Heath.
