Junior coaching events have been well supported throughout the Summer. Handicaps continue to tumble – notable congratulations to Zack Murphy (h/c14), James Waterfield (h/c 17) and Kate Frankham (h/c 17). Chris and Jonathan Harbord have been cut 10 shots each to 40 & 30 – it was noted at the last coaching event that they can both now drive more than 200 yards!! Peter Brough won the Junior Cup ending a 4-year run by Josh Holmes. The Match Play comp is underway and it is hoped it will be completed by the end of the Summer holidays; a new ‘rabbits’ match play cup is also underway for the higher non-congu handicappers.
Our Squad has had an excellent year. They have come within a whisker of winning their Junior League Group. Having won 2 and drawn 2 matches we needed to halve our last match against Cosby. This went to the wire and a putt only 2 inches short on the 18th in the last pairing kept us out of the finals. We have much to draw on and despite the disappointment I am confident we will make it to the finals next year; the bespoke squad coaching has paid off and will be continued. The Squad are going to the PGA course at Collingtree for an away day, which is well deserved.
Many congratulations to Kate Frankham who has had an excellent year. She has just won the Under 13 Class in the Leicestershire Girls Championship where she shot a nett 69 – her handicap continues to drop and she is on track to make her target of 15 by the end of the season.
James Waterfield and Kate Frankham have just played in the Stowe Putter competition at Stowe School, Bucks. James shot a 42 finishing second in the under 12 group, but the undoubted highlight was having their prizes presented by Alan Lamb. Kate has since been selected to play in the County Girls team.
Lucy Benoist (age 8) pictured in the centre at Western Park, has been selected for girl’s County development training following her overall third place in her first season of Flag 50 competitions.
Equipment/Kit Mart
It is proposed to introduce a junior equipment/kit pool to help new young juniors get started. Donations of serviceable but redundant equipment/kit suitable for the under 12s would be gratefully received. In particular children’s golf shoes will be useful.
Practice golf balls
If you are looking for a home for your old golf balls lying around in the garage/at home they can be of use for Junior Coaching. A bucket/bin will be provided in the Pro Shop!
