The week after the British Open, James Cushing was lucky enough to be invited by his sponsors Cobra to play a round of golf at Woburn with his idol Ian Poulter. James had a wonderful day but, James being James, it was not without adventure.

On one of the par three holes Ian said to James ‘I bet you a fiver that I will be nearer the pin than you’. James’ response was to try to up the anti to £100 but was persuaded by Ian that it would be foolhardy to take on the man who came second in this year’s British Open for £100 and so the original £5 stake was agreed upon. The proviso was that whoever came nearest the pin with their tee shot also had to take no more than two putts to hole out.

Ian Poulter hit his 7 iron to 25 feet of the hole and challenged James to “ get inside that’’.  James then hit his shot to 8 feet, Ian congratulated him but said “ it’s not over yet, Mini me.”

Ian Poulter did no more than hole his putt for a birdie and James three putted!!  We are all still laughing about it now, but at least James was presented with a  £5 note signed by his idol.
