President's Day August 2008

Having arrived at 6.30 in the morning, I had a tiring but really enjoyable day made even more so by all 184 players who had booked turning up and on time (well mostly). I was particularly pleased to see that 22 ladies joined the field, most of them in a mixed group, and the comments from everybody over the post round drinks seemed to indicate that the AM AM format was very popular and resulted in a fun round of golf. Chris Brown and Sandra Morris who played with two young guns Stephen and Mark Mair – and who they had not met before - said “they had not had such an enjoyable round of golf in a long time”.

Most of you had a go at the chipping competition – hats off to Frank Richardson who had the only hole in one and the best overall score with 19 points and to Kate Frankham who had the best ladies score with 14 points.
Overall though, the scores showed that most of us could benefit from some chipping lessons from Lee or his team and I owe all in the Pro’s shop a big ’thank you’ for the hard work they put in to help make the day a success. Thanks also to the greenstaff for preparing the course and creating such a good target for the chipping – I have a feeling it might still be there next year.

The ‘hidden prizes’ for best dressed lady and gentlemen golfer went to Louise Burrell and Scott Milner respectively – well done and let's hope we will see some really spectacular outfits next year.

The quiz proved a mixed success with some groups putting all their efforts into the golf. Many thanks to those that ‘had a go’ – the fact that Jerry Casper knew that the most successful US Ryder Cup golfer was Billy Casper (I wonder why) and Peter Cornish knew that the Ryder cup was made of gold and was 17 inches tall made the difference and their team which included Chris Wormleighton and Barry Spencer triumphed. Jerry admitted “we knew we had a better chance of winning the quiz than the golf”.

I was delighted that so many people supported the presentation – many thanks to all that came, it really put the final gloss on the day. Congratulations to the overall winners Daren Peace, Roger Peace, Michael Parkinson and Mark Ewen, who came in with 91 points, and to all the other prize winners.

And FINALLY I captured this picture during the day – send a caption to the newsletter team - a bottle of wine to the one I think is the best.
