Senior Moments

Good news continues. It’s great to report that after ten matches the Seniors are still unbeaten with nine wins and one match halved.
The very popular George Pearce was 80 on 10th May and was presented with an engraved glass tumbler to mark the occasion. May George have many more birthdays.
Brian Asbury had a hole in one, his first, at our match at Kibworth and celebrated the occasion by providing a tot of whisky for all 32 match players and then going out and buying a new car.!!

We are looking forward to the Seniors' Centenary Competition on the 3rd of June and the Seniors' Open on the 11th followed by the Seniors' Away Day at Olton Golf Club.

Cementing our place in the local community

We are very pleased to welcome golfers from Cemex to Lutterworth Golf Club on Friday 3rd July.  As one of the local area's most important employers, it is hoped that they have a great day at Lutterworth and that it encourages their long term involvement with the club.

Because of the number of players involved on the day, there will unfortunately be some disruption to normal Friday play for members.  If you are planning to play the course that day, then please check with the Pro Shop to see when play is possible.

The event will be marshalled to ensure that things run smoothly and we would encourage members to raise any issues directly with the marshalls so that problems can be resolved, I will also be around to assist during the day.

The day not only provides a significant amount of revenue for the club, but additionally gives us a chance to showcase our facilities.  I am sure that our members will extend a warm welcome to our guests.

Hugh McClean (Chair of Marketing)

Festival Week

This year sees the first of what we hope will become an annual festival week at Lutterworth Golf Club.

There are different events each day from 24-27 August and we would encourage members to invite guests to play.  The corporate day on Friday 27 gives the opportunity to invite business contacts to a golf day without the expense of individually hosting an event.

Posters with details of the events are on display in the club house and further information can be found on the web site at http://www.lutterworthgc.co.uk/openfixtures.php

From your Professional

The season is now in full swing and the warm weather is here.... well some days, and it's time to play some good golf!! My Professional Day start sheet is now out , the format is the same as last year which is texas scramble- teams of 4 (any combination of ladies, men and juniors), times are going fast so don't miss out on some of the hardest pin positions ever!!

Please click for the latest action and pro's tip of the month...........

Junior Section

The Junior Section is now 50 strong and I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members; these include Faye and Sophie and it is pleasing to see that there are some girls out there who want to learn to play golf!  Monthly coaching has continued, however, we have been dogged with bad weather and the last 2 sessions have had to be curtailed early due to rain.  Click here for more junior news.

Lejogrun

For any who don't aleady know, Lejog is an acronym meaning 'Lands End to John O' Groats'

Many people have traversed these two destinations in either direction over the years, taking a variety of routes and doing it in different ways. Some have walked it alone or in a couple or in a group or backwards or with their dog!! Many have cycled it and a few headcases have actually run it.

Malcolm Bassett (a member of Lutterworth Golf Club until August - hopefully he will rejoin in due course) and Aly Wren are two of these headcases. They have been running it from South to North using a mainly off-road route i.e. footpaths, bridleways, green-lanes and small country roads. The main principle being to avoid main A and B roads.

The adventure started at Lands End on Good Friday 10th April and at the time of writing is due to finish tomorrow 28th May having covered a distance of at least 1117 miles over 7 weeks running every single day (according to the blog on many days Aly and Malc ran more than they intended)!! They have had company along the way with friends running with them and giving them much needed support. Congratulations to them both- what an achievement!! How on earth are they now going to get back to 'normal' life?

Whilst running more than 1100 miles Malcolm and Aly will be accepting donations and generally trying to raise money for Marie Curie Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. To donate please log on to www.lejogrun.co.uk

Mind Matters - from Geoff Yates

Does putting need to be difficult?

Try and think like this; line - target - contact. Yes it can be that simple.

Get an image of the hole in your brain, use your imagination to draw a line on the green, focus on the front of the ball and make the stroke.

Alternatively, try looking at the hole when you make your stroke especially if you have a good technique.

Allow your eyes to make all the calculations and I'm convinced you'll putt better. Putting should be a simple process don't over complicate it.

From the Captain

I am very pleased to report that we now have a full male membership and a waiting list of applicants wishing to join.  There are some vacancies for Ladies and we would welcome applications for new lady members.

As a committee, I believe that we are working well together.  Amongst the topics that we are addressing is the problem of slow play and we are also monitoring the impact of the relaxation of the dress code.

The committee is looking at the option of making the area containing the snooker table a "19th Hole", with adjacent smoking facilities outside.  We would welcome any thoughts and ideas from members on this matter.

My Captain's Day is on Saturday June 20th, please click here for details.  I hope that as many members as possible are able to attend and they are welcome to bring family and friends.

Derek Wheatley

Handicaps and competitions

Active/Inactive Handicaps

From January 2010 part of the entry conditions for all Lutterworth Golf Club non-qualifying competitions will require members to have an ACTIVE handicap.

This condition will also apply to all Club Opens and Invitations.

Please note that these conditions are likely to apply to other Club Opens/Invitations.

So please try to submit at least 3 qualifying scores this year and retain your ACTIVE handicap.

Please click here to see the official poster released on this subject by the EGU amd EWGA.

Open competitions at Lutterworth

Please be reminded that all entrants to open competitions at Lutterworth must have a current handicap certificate.  If you are bringing a guest to one of these competitions, please let them know that they will be required to produce their certificate on the day (this can often be faxed through from their home club).

Handicaps & Competitions Committee

From the Ladies Captain

Membership of the club has been very successful this year - but we still have vacancies for Ladies. So come on Lady Members, invite interested players to try the course and join us, taking advantage of our special offer - see the front page of the club website at www.lutterworthgc.co.uk for details.

Read here from Bubbles, our wonderful Lady Captain, about what has been going on and remember to join her on 25th July for Ladies Captain's Day.

Speed of play

Speed of play continues to be an issue in general play and particularly in competitions.
In simple terms, if we can speed up play, then more members will be able to play the course at busy times.

General aims

Lutterworth is not a particularly long or hilly course and there are only short walks between greens and the next tee, so it should be possible to complete rounds reasonably quickly.

3 balls should aim to complete their rounds in no more than 3 hours 30 minutes and may be subject to penalties if they exceed 3 hours 45 minutes.

4 balls should aim to complete their rounds in no more than 3 hours 45 minutes and may be subject to penalties if they exceed 4 hours.

When the halfway house is in use, please do not break for more than 5 minutes and always try to get onto the 11th tee by the time the group ahead are at the ditch.

Players should always aim to keep up with the group in front, not simply stay ahead of the group behind.  If a gap develops, due to looking for a ball etc., then all efforts should be made to close the gap as quickly as possible.

If the following group is being delayed by your group searching for a ball, then wave them through as early as possible - not after you have been looking for several minutes.

In general, groups should aim to be reaching the tee on a par four when the group ahead are playing, or have just played, their second shots.

In competitions early players have a responsibility to set a reasonable pace of play for the day.  If the first groups are slow, it is extremely difficult for later groups to improve the speed of play.

For more specific guidance as to how to speed up play please click here.

The committee have no wish to impose penalties on members for slow play, but it will become necessary if the general speed of play at busy times does not improve.
