In all, 199 people took part in my President’s Day AM AM, a fantastic turn out, especially as the weather forecast at the beginning of the week was very discouraging – many thanks to you all. I was hoping for a fun day and I think it was – for most of you at least – and I was delighted to see a good sprinkling of ladies and juniors in the teams. We have had a large number of new members over the last 2 or 3 years and for me there were quite a few new faces, so I appreciated the opportunity to meet you and enjoy a drink at the end of the round.
A combination of the wind and a few challenging pin placings made the competition quite tough and it was no surprise that it was won by the team of Josh Holmes, Sam Skerratt, Zack Bevins and Mike Colclasure with a score of 85 points, Josh and Sam being first team players!! However they were pushed hard by Chris Sime, Jim Bailie, Doug Anderson and David Stead who had the same score but lost on countback – bad luck guys.
I have to take responsibility for the pin placings. From the comments we received some were quite challenging – especially the 5th – and they were made harder as the day progressed and the wind and sun made the greens faster. Fortunately most of you looked on them as part of a fun day and maybe the cool bag of beers was a small compensation.
The gusty wind also caused us a few nervous moments when it threatened to blow the “hospitality gazebo” away, but it survived and provided a welcome break from the wind for the post round refreshments.
There was only one “hole in one” in the chipping competition and that was by Roger Peace who managed to score 25 points to win from David Allison who managed 21 points.
I thought the course looked in very good condition – thanks to Jon Barr and his team for their hard work. Thanks also to Lee and the team from the Proshop who worked tirelessly during the day to make it a success and to James Waterfield and Carlton who helped me out on the day.
The Caribbean Evening and prize presentation was also a success with lots of you entering into the spirit of the occasion by donning flowery shirts and in one case a pair of coconuts!!!
The steel band, which played during the early evening provided an authentic touch of the Caribbean and great accompaniment to the delicious Caribbean buffet that was provided by our caterers. Not too much action on the dance floor for the disco but maybe everybody was exhausted by a long day. I would like to thank Lewis and all his staff for entering into the spirit of the occasion and not only providing great food and service but arranging the music and the support from the brewery.

I think the cocktails were a success and I am told that these will now be a regular feature and the speciality of barman Alex!
Being on the tee before 7.00am to welcome the first team out and leaving around midnight makes it a long day but I have to say it was well worth it!!
