Judy Douglas had run the event for 10 years and raised several thousands of pounds for the charity so she was pleased to hand over the reins. After a very helpful meeting with Judy, Alison and I got our thinking caps on and came up with the idea of a Bottle, Jars and Plants sale, a raffle and the John Lewis grid game which had been provided by MacMillan Cancer Trust. We also ran a 10 hole Stableford competition on the day.
The 29th September arrived Alison, Elaine (Chappell) and I descended on the golf club at 8am to set up. Helen from Charisma Catering was a treasure and provided us with trestle tables, napkins etc, she even helped us move the furniture and provided us with a very welcome cup of coffee.
Soon after 8.45am competitors started to arrive, the registration was done by Elaine and Alison sold raffle tickets. I took on the task of setting up the Bring and Buy Sale items.
Once all the competitors were out on the course Elaine went to the half way house to collect the cards in, so that anyone who wanted to play 18 holes could continue. It was a relief that the weather was kind but even so to stand out there for 2 or 3 hours was beyond the call of duty. The cards were checked by Christine Ratcliffe who read out the prize winners:-
Silver Division 1st Laura Vasconcellos 2nd Hazel Bond
Bronze Division 1 1st Joan Helyer 2nd Sandra Morris
Bronze Division 2 1st Liz Toney 2nd Margaret Fountain
The bottles of wine prizes were donated by Lillian Pilkington and the golf balls by Carol Gemmell.
During the Bring and Buy sale we had on offer bottles of wine, elderflower cordial, perfume, hand cream etc. Jars consisted of jams, pickles and chutneys etc many of them home made, you ladies must have been peeling, chopping and cooking forever to produce these.
Rod Paddon who isn’t even a member but is fortunate enough to be a neighbour of Tracy gave us 10 different varieties of jam!!! They just flew off the stall at £2 each. Many of the good quality plants were donated by Val and Rosie. Anyone who has seen their gardens know how green fingered they both are.
The raffle proved to be the best money winner. We sold over 900 tickets, what a generous lot you are. Many of the prizes had been donated by local businesses in Lutterworth, we had lots of vouchers including Sunday Lunch for Two at the club, donated by Charisma Catering and an impressive looking Afternoon tea donated by Margaret Fountain. Brian Wooldrige ate his prize as soon as he received it as it was one half of a large cake donated by Charisma. In fairness I should mention that he did ask for the cake to be cut into slices and shared with his golfing partners.
Jazz Hair Design donated a hairdo, Mike Flack donated a meat voucher, Rob Ford donated a gift pack of beauty products and Lee Sports donated a rather fetching ladies golf top which I shall be wearing quite soon! Jenny Young donated a facial.
Christine Brown ran the John Lewis Grid Game; all that writing was good therapy for her wrist. This is a National competition provided by MacMillan Cancer Trust. It would be the icing on the cake if someone from Lutterworth Golf Club won the top prize of £7000!!
A special thank you to all our helpers one regret is that there was not a photographer to recall the happy scene, but there is always next year!!!
Now for the moment of truth. We raised a whopping £622.15p for MacMillan Cancer Trust which was more than we expected. A big big thank you to you all for making the event such a success we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.
